Will someone please troll this reviewer?
-
^ and to signal, a) that he's a reviewer (wowie!!), and, b) that he's got the *right* moral stance on the issue of 'personal responsibility' ("pat me on the back for having the most predictable social science perspective, Twitter friends").
Social media circle-jerk, as per usual.
Problem is, he's violating blind review. He should get spanked for that.

^ RK doesn't name the journal. But somebody out there wrote a paper that dared to mention "resilience" and "grit" and submitted it for blind review, not expecting for it to be mocked publicly on Twitter by RK, who is also enlisting his friends to give him material for his 'smack down' (apparently he doesn't have the citations himself). And we on sjmr are the ones who get called bullies...

It appears RK violates ASA code of ethics with that tweet. At the very least, a complaint should be filed with ASA ethics committee. This kind of stuff is poisonous to the discipline and chilling to scientific method more generally... not mention the negative impact of public shaming for authors. http://www.asanet.org/sites/default/files/asa_code_of_ethics-june2018.pdf

Rory - see ASA Code of Ethics:
16. Responsibilities of Reviewers
(b) In reviewing material submitted for publication, grant support, or other evaluation purposes, sociologists adhere to the strict confidentiality of the process and respect the proprietary rights of the author(s).

RE: “Hi sjmr trolls! Sorry ur mad at me for asking for help finding more citations because a paper is flawed”
If it's that flawed, he shouldn't be needing so much help. In addition to the ethical concerns, it also brings to mind the question of whether he's qualified to review this paper.

Exactly - even after a quick google search, there is totally a body of literature on “grit” and “resilience” when it comes to high school and college dropouts. It sounds like he just doesn’t like the idea - but taking to Soc Twitter to basically excoriate and mock the author is the opposite of emotional detachment and rational deliberation.
