Why would anyone think US sociologists would be "compelled by Frances liberal reputation"? These are the people who insist on using Latinx even when shown data that most Latinos reject the term or find it offensive.
That brings up another point: wokeness flops in France because French is a gendered language, and half the content of wokeism is language policing. Sometimes this involves replacing terms arbitrarily designated as offensive with new woke terms (American Indians become Native Americans, p/e/d/o/philes become Minor Attracted Persons, the group now called African Americans saw their name changed multiple times just in the 20th century), but also happens through things like "de-gendering" words (or these can be combined, hence Latinos become Latinx).
French as a language is protected by the Toubon Law, and trying to wokeify the language would be illegal under present law. Even English terms that enter colloquial French speech like "email" become regulated or prohibited as to appearance in official publications.
I've seen American sociologists literally call for de-gendering the Spanish language, failing to see the colonialism/Anglo-imperialism entailed in this. If they have even limited success in that, it would be merely because Latin America is a long-term colonial sphere of influence of the United States.
France by contrast views itself (accurately or not) as a global counter-hegemon against Americanism. Wokeness is viewed as equivalent to Americanism or as merely the newest phase of Americanism by most people in Europe. Asking the French to go woke is like asking them if they want their culture to become "more American" -- wokeness is just the imposition of the political culture and values of the American corporate class. France is one of the last societies where it could be expected to gain any traction.
