Why do people write trade books if they don't count for anything?

I read a few threads on here and I noticed that trade books do not count toward tenure in most cases. I'm assuming they won't help in obtaining a counteroffer either (please let me know if I'm wrong). If trade books don't count for anything, why write them?

They do help to elevate a scholar's profile. Not everything is about "getting tenure."

Money. same reason people write textbooks. easy way to bump your salary without moving to another university. "update" the book every few years and you have a long-term revenue source.

I would take a trade book where you. make $10K to $100K over a university press book that nets you $350. Are you smoking something?

You also have the opportunity of getting your book read by someone other than an academic who needs to read it for research.
