Is there any Gary Becker style economic theory for transgender?
What economic theories explain the phenomenon of transgender?

There's actually pretty compelling psychological research suggesting that straight men who transition to become lesbians (a la Caitlyn Jenner) are motivated by a fundamentally different mechanisms than gay men men who transition to become straight ladies (a la Lavern Cox). And yes I know they were both always women bla bla bla. But in reality, the clinical evidence suggests the two groups have different motivations, different etiologies, different trajectories.

In NYC for a time I was good friends with the acting coach (who is a gay man) of Laverne Cox and Jamie Clayton. I thought his observations on the psyches of transgender women were more interesting than anything I've read in an academic text. Essentialist theories do not really get at the complexity of the matter, and academics who write on this subject are usually willfully ignorant. (I never met Laverne and only met Jamie once briefly, she was dating Keanu Reeves around that time.)
