Irvine is great.

Maryland seems to have declined a lot through retirements and some key losses, plus their newer people are not on par with an elite place.

I can't see a good argument that Albany is a top 5 program.

If things like faculty being recognized by major awards/honors (e.g., Cavan, Fellow), publications in the top outlets in both soc and crim (Crim/ASR/AJS), and graduate student placements at other top ten departments are key to the assessment, I think Penn State should be near the top, along with Irvine.

South Carolina is not on the rise. They have Alpert and no one. Their APs (DIS, KMB, AM) are mediocre at best
I�m thinking UMSL, FSU, UF, American, will all drop. SUNY Albany too unfortunately. Risers would be Northeastern, Georgia State, and maybe South Carolina? Irvine might overtake all of the top three.

Since when does Brame not count as an elite scholar?

Albany and umsl should not be in the top 5 with all their departures. They are highly ranked mainly as a function of what people did 10-20 years ago.

Maryland, penn state and Irvine are the top three when you look at scholarly production and placements

MSL, SUNY, FSU, Maryland, UF will drop.Sam Houston should go wayyyy down. American too. Both of those places have squandered good opportunities with weird recent hires.

Northeastern, Georgia State, Irvine, Penn State should rise.

Cincy will stay high because it has a 100 alums out there boosting it every chance they get. UPenn will stay where it is. So will Rutgers.

This is fair. Alpert, Brame and no one. Their APs were quite simply bad hires.

Does anyone actually think you're much better off at GSU or freaking Cincinnati than Northwestern (Hagan and Papachristos, among others)

Crim depts are like the little kids table until they can make inroads in good schools.

If you’re doing Criminology, then yes. GSU is better. Hagar Papachristos...and?

Meanwhile GSU has the top quality criminologists in the country (Richard Wright, Volcan Topalli, Scott Jacques, etc) plus Tim Brezina, Callie Burt, Leah Daigle. They just hired William Sabol who was head of the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Wow, I had no idea how strong GSU had gotten. I just checked out their faculty page and they've got some pretty notable people. Aren't they a newer (as in created in the last 10-15 years) program too?

Georgia state is an up and comer, but not top five yet. Faculty is good but not great. No students produced yet, to speak of.

Oh for sure, I'm not saying they're top 5. I just had no opinion of the program other than that it exists. Now I have a pretty positive opinion of it.
