My critique of sociology and demography is of epistemological concern. Too many theories and methods reinforce Eurocentric (i.e. White) logic while hiding behind the language of objectivity.

I just ordered White Logic White Methods, do you have a better rec? I was definitely taught all my racial disparities and statistics methods by white pplWoman facepalming
This doesn't even make any sense because there are white people in the comments recommending books, some of which are written by white people. And the woke dogma says you can't learn anything about race from a white person, even if they're repeating the exact same thing one bIack person said.
In 2020 the entire academic system almost went bankrupt and in the next five years it's going to be downsizing substantially. Programs will be much leaner. This crowd of people will not be with us much longer.
um, no. this guy will very likely get tenure at UTK, regardless of what he publishes, ironically getting special treatment bc of his race.
What exactly is cringe worthy? Are you defending demography?

it's cringeworthy that his critique of sociology is that white people developed theory and methods. can a critique be any shallower? also, hate to say it, but some of the best empirical and theoretical (demographic) work on race was by white sociologists (see Massey and Denton).
The road to respectability for sociology should prominently feature demography. Or do you think that the 'critiquing white logic" c/rap is the answer to what ails the discipline?

I see. Not at all, I don't think this "white methods" critique is sufficient. That said, I don't think demography belongs in sociology. It's policy science, it's really good for solving administrative problems. This is not a downgrade: I think it should receive more funding, but work closely with the state.

Not at all. Academia completely lacks self awareness and this is the kind of stuff admin love and faculty love to virtue signal about. This will be the new normal. Regression analysis will be viewed as r/a/c/i/s/t and singular, subjective, observations from a middle class bIack person will become the new scientific standard in the social sciences. White wokes will fall in line and those who don't will be canceled.

Disagree. Many if not most of the strongest sociology programs today with the best placement records are closely affiliated with population centers and train their students in demography. Sociology has the potential to offer a more theoretically sophisticated version of demography (again, see Massey and Denton) and the best programs do just this.
Also, sociology should be falling over itself to be policy-relevant and solving administrative problems, and getting more grant $$ will open up more positions and make sociology far more desirable to univ administrators as programs are increasingly evaluated in "show me the money" terms.
Wow you people have no idea what the epistemic critique of 'whiteness' is do you? You need to get your head around the distinction between criticism 'white people' and the relational position of whiteness as a power position. The critique is not that these methods have been developed by white people, it's that they have been developed historically as part of a system of racial domination (look at the history of statistics for example) and is used in all kinds of ways to perpetuate racial inequality (look at 'predictive policing'). I love how you feel you can criticize something you don't even understand. You should actually take the time to learn something - read some books - before you spout your mouth off.

Totally missing the point. Creating jobs and solving the state's problems are not science... But how can you convince a demographer who was never properly trained in theory... hopeless.

Yeah, Hume figured out there are problems with empiricism a long time before these c/l/o/w/n/s. EBS writing about c/r/a/c/k/e/r/l/a/n/d University and every woke twitter person saying white people existing = bad is the extent of the critique of white methods.
I don't know how many times it has to be said but no matter how many people you trot out and rage against for having a seemingly insignificant research agenda / publishing in low-ranked journals etc, the fact is that once they're hired they just have to produce X number of articles and they'll get tenure.

Predictive policing is not Sociology and those doing predictive policing are not sociologists. If you're gonna imply sociology perpetuates racial inequality by using statistics and then use predictive policing as your example, you are playing a disingenuous game. Why not cite the way Massey and Denton do statistics/demography? They are actual sociologists.
Also, you can tell these people don't have any substance because then they would be calling out policing researchers by name in scholarship and social media instead of rando white people on twitter.
But this would mean doing something other than a/t/t/a/c/k/i/n/g a stickman, so I don't expect the woke academic crowd to ever do it.
Massey and Denton discovered racism through demography! Wow! Tell that to black people. What's that? They're not your audience? Who is? The State? ohhh I see...
