She literally brought everyone?s dislike onto her when noone had actually talked about her. I really doubt she can transfer to other programs after this fiasco.
Why would you get in trouble while noone had actually cares about you? Why? Did this help your career now? I donot think so. You definitely won?t be an administrator at UChicago.

100% this. In fact, it'll be great for her productivity once grad students spread the word about this and everyone stops asking her to advise their work.

I'll try to be as factual as I can: it's been a decade (maybe more) since we've started hearing that U of C had changed, that the dept doesn't let students fall through the cracks, that they professionalize grad students, that faculty members care about them, that there's no cutthroat competition to get faculty attention or an extra year of funding, etc.

For sure, some things have improved: PhD students get 5 years of funding (let's not talk about the MAPSS, though..), and placements seem better vs 5 years ago.

But I can't shake off the impression that you'll find a number of toxic things in Hyde Park that would never fly at most other T20 depts, including the KKH tribune. And that the "life of the mind" culture is a convenient excuse to look elsewhere.

I mean, the vast majority of tenured faculty clearly haven't figured it out yet.

Seriously ? You think tenured faculty have any power in the contemporary American university structure? Wake up.

Can someone help me understand why KH would want to step into an admin role? What's the attraction? Money, prestige, less pressure to do research, plus no teaching/advising? Honest question.

^ I can’t speak for KH but I do know quite a few ppl who went to administration because of the money and their inability to produce good work. It is a pretty easy decision, especially for those who don’t really enjoy research.

KKH has done the smartest thing ever. She has written an op-ed that will prevent any grad student from wanting to work with her. That is actually a god-send. No annoying crying complaining grad students banging on your door all the time for help. Perfect.

Bingo. And lol I went to grad school with these same students in the early nineties. I wondered whatever happened to them. I always thought they disappeared because they refused to grow up but hey, what did I know?

Perfect.

And the world that is for a Chicago grad student is they get 30k a year, free healthcare, and free tuition for literally zero labor from them for the university, And yet they complain.

While 20% of the country has lost their jobs, Chicago grad students are still getting paid for not doing any work, and still complaining about someone suggesting they can it and use their free money to further their own career prospects.

It is unethical not to call them entitled and whiny for objecting to this.

In general, I think fully-funded phd students don't realize how sweet they have it (You can get paid to get a master's in stats! working 20-30 hour weeks if you want!)

But it's pretty silly to call stipends and healthcare "free" when grad students are TAing, RAing, teaching, and doing whatever other activities that generate revenue for the university.

But it's pretty silly to call stipends and healthcare "free" when grad students are TAing, RAing, teaching, and doing whatever other activities that generate revenue for the university.

Chicago grad students aren't doing those things. Across five years on the quarter system they TA two times total and teach one time total. For that they get 160k, and free healthcare and turion for half a decade.

You're right that they have absolutely no idea how sweet they have it.

Her op-ed was about the job market.

So who is going to be the one to break it to them that the job market actually is a competitive market, and that you don't get to apply for a job as a group of people?

This is not an ideological vision. It's just a simple statement of fact. How do they not get that?
