should graduate students be paid for service work? yes, at least a little bit
On my Facebook feed, the issue of graduate student service popped up. How much service do graduate students perform? Should they be compensated? Not a "useful question." The cases in which he expects students to be paid are cases in which *students themselves* have agitated for participation. 99.9% of the time, nobody asked them to serve on the committee (and nobody really *wants* them to serve on the committee). They are there because someone, 20 years ago, protested that "students should have representation on this committee." It is like a courtesy appointment of a sociologist to a policy school. It appears like someone has trained an AI program, faboibot4000, on the last 1000 fabio poasts and pressed play. The algorithm:
1) find few words or phrases -- "grad students," "service" -- that are used more often among sociologists than the general public.
2) find words or phrases that often occur in close proximity to them in online discussions of sociologists.
3) sentiment analysis to determine x > y
4) press 'enter' and have chat bot compose 'blog poast by fabio' that uses all terms but 'argues' y > x.
