I was recently screwed by Theory and Society.
I'm pissed. This type of experience so common and so well-known that I'm starting an informal petition here calling for it to stop. If I had the guts and/or tenure I'd start a formal one.
Good if you advise Springer to replace Theory and Society's Executive and Managing Editors asap.
No Good if you think they should stay.

The market/publishing is already hard enough for theorists. General journals often reply, "Too theoretical," so outlets are slim. Soc Theory has extremely low acceptance rates and love for a relatively small handful of theoretical traditions. And then Theory and Society has horrible editors. EJST for the win?
Theory & Society...looks like it was founded by Alvin Gouldner, run by Janet Gouldner, and everyone who works on it lives in St. Louis.

The team is probably motivated by protecting Gouldner's legacy.
What was so bad? Had the typical wait for reviews (6-9 months) and then was rejected?
Submitting to a journal is not guaranteed and you knew the review time was slow when you submitted there

I read it and it seems typical. Given the number of submissions and even R&R, not all papers are going to be published. Plus you don't know if the reviewers wrote confidential comments to the editors and you may not have justified your changes. Also, people who are pushing against second and third r&rs this is what happens - more rejections rather than more chances to revise

That's not right but that's a) selection bias (People who are mad or have bad experiences are more likely to complain/post), b) how often is this happening? Again, the wiki isn't a good indicator and c) that's not the experience talked about earlier in the thread

AJS gets made fun of for taking around 6 months to review too often. But Theory and Society is in a timeframe of its own. Every theorist I've ever talked to says they either don't submit because it takes so long or they think very hard about submitting due to the wait. That's unacceptable

I replied to this but deleted. Why?
No one should have to wait a year or more for a review. Sure, journals mess up sometimes for reasons outside their control (reviewers dropping the call, etc.). But Theory and Society is almost always around a year long. That's a serious editorial problem. Not to mention not replying to author inquiries

Janet Gouldner, probably her fault.
Just thinking, she might be hanging on to protect A. Gouldner's legacy.
