NYTimes: How Genetics Is Changing Our Understanding of ‘Race’

I really dont get the juggalo thing? Theres nothing about it only working for one race.
One of ICP’s most popular songs is titled Chicken Huntin’ which was released in 1994. From first glance this song sounds incredibly violent as the lyrics go; “So tell Mr. Billy Bob I’m a cut his neck up. Slice, poke, chop chop, stab, cut.” Despite the violent lyrics, there is actually a lot more to this song than meets the eye. This song actually originates from a Juggalo’s experience before joining the group when he lived in North Carolina and witnessed act after act of racism toward African Americans and hatred toward minority groups. Juggalos thrive on diversity and accept anyone, “men, women, black, white, brown, yellow, fat as f***, skinny as a broomstick, ghey, straight, bi, trans, young, old and folded and loopy, rich, poor” (Watson 2017). Thus, Chicken Huntin’ is about the hatred Juggalos feel toward southern rednecks who are discriminatory and racist. Since most Juggalos come from minority classes, they are strong advocates of promoting equality.

It doesn’t make any sense.

Ok. I didnt accuse anybody of racism. Or is this supposed to be substantiating the original claim? It doesnt make any sense. The most typical type of people who identify as a Juggalo are white men living in low, poverty socioeconomic classes. Naturally this socioeconomic class has much stigma associated with it, and because of their gang label, Juggalos have even more negative stigma related to their low-class status. Whether it be their obscure song lyrics, violent looking hatchet symbol, or clown makeup, Juggalos are faced with many negative stigmas. Instead of letting these stigmas bring them down, Juggalos embrace it. By embracing their variety of typically unfavorable stigmas, Juggalos show the public they don’t care what others think of them.

Race is a social construct (not real) in which whites benefit from being at the top of the hierarchy constructed. What dont you understand?
If that’s true, then how can juggalo face paint distort facial recognition software?We/ird non sequitur bro. Maybe lay off the pipe for a few days?

I read his article years ago. My recollection was that he was mostly on the money but quite inarticulate. Did he deny the constructed elements of race? I don’t recall him doing that.
Shiao's article's premise was to refute the social constructionist account of race.
This is directly from the introduction to Shiao's article:
"The first part of this article describes the social constructionist account of race as lacking biological reality"Also:
We introduce our main conceptual intervention of clinal classes by first summarizing the cur/rent biological foundation of the theory of race as a social construction. We then explain its shortcomings especially in contrast with recent research on the human genome. Third, we formally define our solution of clinal classes and further discuss recent genetic research to explain how they provide a biological basis for racial and ethnic categories. In brief, we recommend the removal of obsolete claims about human biology from racial constructionism.
So then, you said:
My guess is that our low I Q econ undergread friend is under the mistaken impression that social construction is in a zero sum competition with biological explanations, and that only one of those theories can be “true”. I don’t know how to communicate with such misinformed binary thinkers.
Do you think that Shiao is a low IQ econ undergrad? It's shocking how you would refer in those terms to someone who published in a leading sociology journal.

I think an issue here is that there are two conceptually very different theses are both presented as "race is a social construct."
The first of these we can cal soft constructionism, something like, "Racial categories of social pertinence have shifted over time, and some socially important racial categories would refer to paraphyletic biological categories." The latter could include, for example, early taxonomies that describe black Africans and Papuans/Australian aborigines as being a single racial category when in reality they are heavily divergent taxa -- genetically, both black Africans and Papuans are more closely related to a European than either would be to one another. The second being hard constructionism or, "There are no biologically discernible categories of humans and human ancestry cannot be described by looking at a person's genome." This could be repetition of Lewontin's fallacy which happens frequently, use of outdated and debunked claims by someone like Boaz on craniometrics, or types of postmodern anti-science agitation by people like Dorothy Roberts.
The soft constructionist thesis is obviously true, but data show the hard constructionist thesis to be absolutely false. Problematically, most sociologists are still in the camp of hard constructionists.
Also, the soft constructionist thesis while literally true is of somewhat questionable pertinence and sometimes used to back up the hard constructionist thesis -- the claim effectively becomes, "Since biological classifications of humans can be documented as having shifted, these categories therefore have no biological validity in the first place." This ignores the history of biology as a scientific process in which taxonomic classification is always being rescrutinized and updated. Look at greatly shifting categorization of a species like the red panda which was at times grouped with distantly related animals before genetic analysis clarified matters.

I'm still waitin' for you clowns (I don't mean that as a compliment) to explain how juggalo facepaint masking facial recognition cameras can be a social construct.
I don't think anyone intelligent understands the as/sumptions underlying your question.Notice how I pointed out facts about juggalo facepaint and all I get are insults? Then the spam started directly after that.
