Segregation and Violence Reconsidered: Do Whites Benefit from Residential Segregation?
In the study, Mike Light openly espouses white nationalists' long-term claim that segregation reduces violence against whities and desegregation is bad.
Hmm, I just read through the paper and I don't see what all the fuss is about. I realize there is a lot of joking and trilling going on ITT, but is anyone genuinely surprised that white neighborhoods have lower homicide rates than black neighborhoods, or that the blacker/whiter the neighborhood the higher/lower the homicide rate? Or that less segregation on a city-wide level means a smaller b/w gap in homicide rates (because of lower black homicide rates)? Haven't we known this for 100 years? I mean, these are their three "big findings" and they are precisely what I would have predicted. What am I missing?

You thought Soc was a meritocracy? Oh no, my friend. You were misinformed. ASR publishes all kinds of utterly useless stuff. But only by people with HRM affiliations. That’s how this thing of ours works.
^^ You aren't missing anything *except* that they want to say that the effect of segregation is causal rather than merely endogenous to local political economy, history, and culture.
But it is utterly implausible that area and year fixed effects are sufficient to identify the causal effect.
