The march was called in protest of NAMBLA's exclusion from the mainstream Stonewall 25 march.

In response to both their exclusion from the March and to the impending debate within ILGA, a group of some 200 prominent "lesbian and gay and other activists, scholars, writers, and artists" presented themselves as the "Spirit of Stonewall" (SOS press release). They produced press releases, held press conferences and organized an alternative march to the mainstream UN March. The discourse used by this group well illustrates another of the main arguments to support NAMBLA inclusion in a gay and lesbian movement, that of gay liberation.
