   We are in a pandemic. Money is tight.
   At most places, before the pandemic, papers didn't trump funding.
   Even if you weren't aware of that, why would you think that papers trump funding during a pandemic?
   I know you think some of us are avoiding the obvious.
   But, have you entertained the possibility that you're in deep denial?
   If she has more grants and you have more awards then YOU DO NOT LOOK SIMILAR ON PAPER.
   One of those things is much more valuable than the other....
   But the awards aren't the relevant data point. She also has 5 papers, versus SL's zero papers. Papers trump dissertation funding, or at least they should.
   Some of yall are trying *real* hard to avoid the obvious.

   SL's funding was external dissertation funding. That absolutely does not trump an ASR in most places.

   I'm not saying it's not great that she got a couple dissertation grants. But an ASR is waaaaaayyyyy more important.

   Is an ASR more important than external funding? The evidence (not this hire) suggests "No."

   1)External funding is harder to get than publishing in ASR.
   2)External funding funds project larger than an ASR paper.
   3)External funding connects one to funders who will follow a person's career, while ASR moves places every 3-5 years, so, relationships don't suggest future connections.
   4)How many grad students can a completed ASR paper fund? How many can someone a completed funded grant fund?

   You ever talk to these complainers IRL and ask about their research?
   When I do it's always on some dusty topic that hasn't been popular since the 80's.
   Actually, I have almost the same topic as SL, I have five first-author pubs in top journals (she has zero), and I have more and bigger awards, yet I didn't even make the long-shortlist at Cornell. When I read about her hire it was a gut-pnuch, I'll admit.
   I've been aware of her work for a while now because we have almost the same topic. She did get better external funding than I did. But considering how similar we look on paper but how much stronger my pubs and other awards are, in an even slightly meritocratic market (which this, of course, is not) I probably would have gotten at least a Zoom interview at any place where she got hired.
   But, she seems nice and hopefully does good research (I've never read her research, since it has never been published). I just wish there were more jobs for all the nice people doing good research.

    I don't blame her. Joint soc/anthro dept. Almost no juniors. Makes you wonder a lot about uni support.

    Only asking because prestige can make up for holes - even large ones - in one's record. This is especially true at Ivies, who value prestige more than most universities, and even truer at Cornell, which is the black sheep of the Ivy League in a lot of ways. So even if you have 5 articles in good journals as you say, that may be significantly counteracted by being at program that's not top 15 or so.

    Also this thread is bonkers. There's no world where grants are more important than pubs, especially ASR.

    Interpretation: they didn't care for the ASR or... opted to take a chance on diversity. Their choice.
