^The good ol' days, when racists were racist
Is it just me or is ASA noticeably less attended this year?

Imagine being the guy who thinks he's more scientific than sociology but refuses to engage in substantive discussion over his attempts at commentary about the discipline.
This. You can't act like you know better than the people who are dismissive of certain work "because racism" and then refuse to defend or clarify your argument "because SJWs." Laaaaaaame.
-
And this is why we circle the drain: Because all attempts at discussion end up with somebody getting called a racist, thus ending the discussion. It's kind of our thing.
You literally just proved the point. Like I said, you refuse to defend your point "because SJWs." How boringly predictable. Again, like I said, I'm sympathetic to your point and would like you to clarify it in a manner that isn't implicitly racist. Is that really so difficult to do? Apparently.
The one ending this discussion is you, my friend. I've asked multiple times for you to continue the conversation, but here you are, throwing a self-righteous tantrum.
Still open to discussing this. Your move. -
You all have taken this starting assumption of lower attendance this year (compared to what? Previous years? Previous years in NY? Previous years in large cities?) and run amock. Sounding like chickens with your heads cut off. Do you have any EVIDENCE for your claim?

Asking for evidence is a form of white racist violence, Kimya thus tweeted.

Alternative possibilities:
A. In NYC, space is at such a premium that there are fewer large rooms where you can observe a lot of people.
B. In NYC, there is so much non-conference stuff to do far from mid-town that attendees spend less time at the conference itself than usual -
Yeah everybody i talked with at the conference mentioned going to fewer panels this year because they wanted to explore NYC. i think any perception of lower attendance is more about people "going" to ASA but spending more time than usual away from the conference itself.

^it has become one. the discipline has always had an activist bend. that wasn't inherently bad, particularly since activist used to compartmentalize their politics in an effort toward unbiased scientific inquiry. at this point, the discipline is overwhelmed with people who are first, foremost, and always activists. also, where they were once "laws that racial segregate schools and forbid interracial marriage are bad" activists and more so toward "white methods white logic" and "anyone who doesn't agree with me is a white supremacist" activists.
