^Im saying this as a property owner in Bloomington. Maybe your reference group is different than mine. I compare Bloomington’s rent/property price to those of at least Chicago if not NYC/SF/Boston, and Bloomington is so cheap

I prefer to live alone and not rent a room in a house packed with 6-8 other people. Also, apartments with or without roommates are not my thing either.

For grad students it’s 15-20K depending on whether you are a teaching or research asst. the students have formed a campus wide union to end the extra fees that the university charges so that they can keep a couple extra thousand or more to themselves per year. Foreign students pay even more in these fees.
