Is it ethical to hire a PhD student from another university to write a lit review and not include them as a coauthor? As/s/ume I would tell them they will not get authorship, and paid them fairly.
Also, what would be a fair wage for them to write a 4-5 page lit review?
It is one thing to hire an RA to search relevant articles and write up summaries. I do this too, and I allow my RA to copy the abstract or a portion of an article if they think that is the best way to summarize it.
It is a totally different matter to hire someone to write a lit review and present it as your own work. I am sure there are people doing it, but that doesn't make it right.
Whether they should be an author depends on how important the lit review is in the piece. If it ends up being a noteworthy intellectual contribution, then they should be even if you pay them. If it’s more like a box your article checks off, then that’s not needed.
