Exactly. The old head above knows that you need to stop drawing conclusions from Twitter. Elite Sociology is still dominated by whites.
Haven't considered leaving the discipline until this years ASA fiasco.

I know this is SJMR and a few trolls have to turn everything into fodder for their imaginary race war, but the vast majority of the embarrassing #ASA18 tweeting is being done by white people. Like I said earlier, it has ALWAYS been like this and, frankly, I'll take 10,000 fresh-faced confused young radicals over the 1000 "Dr. Nira Cain-N'Degocellos" who used to haunt the back rows at ASA.

Costen’s attack on Kimmel is a perfect example of these so called no-name scholars having a direct impact on people’s careers. While I myself will probably never have such a high profile that would put me in the public light like him, this serves as strong evidence against believing that this is all just VLRM nonsense.
-
Coston accused Kimmel of being a jerk and of not being woke enough for a tatted up, highntight sporting AP of women's studies at...VCU, piling on the substantially more serious, but still-anonymous and open accusation of sexual harassment. To date, Coston has had no effect on Kimmel's career. Lessons? Don't be a jerk and don't sexually harass people / don't associate with the kinds of people who will livejournal their RAship with you.
OK, I tried. If you are still convinced that people like Coston will affect your career, maybe you really should find another line of work.

A fair amount of super senior folk only show if they are collecting an award or they have a favorite student/friend/whatever who is doing so.
Those with jobs of decent rank/future prospects are mostly there to keep external networking alive with regard to either external tenure letters or in hopes of getting some outside interest for leverage when they promote to full professor. Additionally many of these people are motivated not to show their best work, because they have a legit shot at getting invited for colloquium talks or to other more selective venues where they get more bang for their buck.
For the activists this is their Olympics/World Cup/Super Bowl/sole moment of off Twitter relevance.
Guess who dominates the sessions...
Doesn't mean they dominate the field. But I do look forward to the day when I'm in that super senior category.
