DO NOT ANSWER. Don't start your grad career by doxxing yourself here.
OP here. Thanks everyone for the feedback!
So what did you choose?
Calm down people. This is not a big deal. Tons of people post questions and comments on SJMR including people who self-identify. This thread is an innocent as it gets. The only people that should be concerned are those who do stupid things here like WG, who did irreparable damage to SJMR, and KS, a mega troll that harassed professors here. In other words, this is like any other forum. Nobody cares if you post here unless you do something stupid, and even then, people forget.

^yes. mind you, HU is in a much higher cost of living, but Michigan offers an exceedingly generous package and a union that continues to power-broker for better everything. Michigan grad students get almost the same healthcare as faculty. The stipend is tethered to inflation, there are childcare subsidies, etc. The only diff is that Michigan requires teaching unless you buy out and the private institutions tend to have more affiliation perks overall.
But package to package let's not pretend that Harvard is somehow shoulders above the competition. Michigan wins out on students who were also recruited by Harvard all the time.
michigan alumn here and yes, the GEO union is a major power-broker. we have the same healthcare as faculty (and it is better healthcare than i have now on the tenure track)
truth.
i was a lazy grad student at Michigan who only decided to care about the job market once I was on it. Landed an R1 MRM as an ABD. Had a friend who was a very promising and accomplished Harvard ABD who did everything right. She landed an R1 MRM...
Plus Michigan students are just all around better people. And not just in Soc, but throughout the entire graduate school the grad students are like a massive tribal support system in a town where everyone their age is also a grad student.
choose harvard if you want to brag to your non-academic friends you "go to harvard", but don't actually care about academic job placement
michigan alum and second and third this. everyone in their 20s and early 30s in A2 is a grad student and we were definitely a tribe.
If you look at their recent placement webpage, you'll find that the only PhD graduates getting tenure track jobs are joint with social work.
Has Michigan even placed anyone in the past few years? Like in a Top 10? They seem like they disappeared like Princeton in terms of placements.
Thought so. Couldn't think of a Michigan placement in a Top 10 in a long time. I guess losing Yu Xie ended all of that.
