Goffman's online response is incredibly weak, and gives more evidence that she is a liar. Confronted with the murder conspiracy accusation, she simply changes her story. She names a hospital that checks IDs, but the hospital denies sharing those IDs with police or anyone else, and Goffman offers no evidence to support her allegation. Nor can she support her incredible allegation that she was interrogated in a police station interview room with a gun on the table.
Goffman denied tenure

Her response has some decent points but was overall really weak.
I don’t think she made up data per se but was incredibly sloppy in making claims that didn’t match her data (eg saying this happens, instead of this is how X thinks what happens; this is a policy vs this person told me x happened or I saw this happen despite hospital policy etc)
Anyone else who made these kinds of sloppy claims would be an embarrassment and not have the elites circle around her to try and protect her

A hospital denying it doesn't disprove it. Corporations lie all the time. And most policies on the books aren't followed in real life.
Why would it be unbelievable that police display their guns to intimidate people? Interrogations involve all kinds of sketchy practices and always have.

I don't see anything that proves Goffman fabricated anything. People keep pointing to supposed smoking guns, but her responses answer those questions and the people who do try and fact-check them come away pretty satisfied.
But it isn't surprising that she was denied tenure since she hasn't published anything since she started at Wisco. A lot of ethnographers have trouble if they're starting a 2nd project but it doesn't look like she ever started. You don't need to be as productive as Jerolmack but there's just no way to defend a record like that.
