I think everyone knows at this point, the academic job market in sociology is not only shrinking but is entirely arbitrary. That is, outcomes have little to nothing to do with productivity, expertise, etc. PLEASE prepare for the private sector. There is no future in this field.

I don't think this is right for a few reasons: 1) scarcity drives strange decisions; 2) scarcity necessarily means that a lot of very productive people aren't selected for; 3) the field does more and more "area specific" searches, meaning that some areas are over represented given the quality of scholars in that area; 4) the field is incredibly polarized, so that the standards used to judge the quality of research are more contentious than ever before. Thus, very low match between those selected for and candidate productivity, etc, and this mismatch is growing.

Alternative theory: whenever yt men are no longer the center of attention, it feels like the apocalypse to them, and they become tin-hat prophets of doom
Yay, let's pretend to be children who spend all day watching Nickelodeon and reading Teen Vogue and regurgitating corporate liberal buzzwords.

Yay, let’s pretend that my theory of diversity as the root of all evil is new and emerging, rather than the same thing I was saying 10 years ago

Let me guess, you're the same i/d/i/o/t t/r/o/l/l who claims the word 'neoliberalism' is a made-up meaningless slur that leftists use to describe anyone they dislike?
Think outside the corporate box once in a while. When you present yourself as having identical views to any 10-year-old child who spends all day watching Nickelodeon, do you realize how intellectually stunted you seem to the adult world? -

I think this is partially true. Certain fields of sociology will be fine (race, health, crim, quant methods). But everyone else is in trouble.
The number of jobs overall may not ever return to pre-covid days. It might rise slightly, but will mostly be in specific fields.

Alternative theory: whenever yt men are no longer the center of attention, it feels like the apocalypse to them, and they become tin-hat prophets of doom
This is the problem with the discipline in a nutshell. This statement is effective within sociology only by negating all empirical indicators of decline, ONLY PROBLEM no single statement should be able to do so. Look at the types of jobs, the number of new jobs, the number of social science citations of sociologist (of course weighted by impact factor), ASA memberships, folks the writing is on the wall here, and yt men or naming another highly heterogenous category ain't gonna magically cure it. Yet, rhetorically, it satisfies until the ice berg hits. A perfect storm.

This sloppy reasoning of identity politics will hurt the economic value of the field. It just isn't fact based enough to win in the long run.

You're the same guy plastering the n word and yt power over lots of SJMR thread? Yes, very tight reasoning you have there...

You literally believe that no actual left-wing exists and that anyone who opposes the corporate liberal wing of the Democrats is a far-right conspiracy theorist? Is that how brainwashed you are by your television?
Based on your first comment, I'm also going to say:
Let me guess, you supported Hillary against Bernie based on the same reasoning of your initial post? "White men" are the problem, and "diversity" is the solution? Weren't people who argue like you shown to be right-wing reactionaries already six years ago?
I haven't seen anyone argue in such moronic manner here in some time. Are you Buggs? -
The Crim train won’t last through the decade. Criminology is increasingly going to align itself with Criminal Justice and branch off into self-sustained departments. Eventually it will go the way of Org Soc to B Schools. Sociologists will only have access to crim jobs at the very top schools who would otherwise be fine on the job market no matter what the conditions are. We are definitely nearing the end of “or similar degree being a mark of crim job applications.

You just made this accusation against two different people in the same thread.
Most people think Phil Cohen is the one spamming hate speech here after his spam bots got thwarted.I bet you spend a lot of time reading Marcus Johnson and Imani Gandy on twitter and that you think that the "far-left" are more racist than the right-wing. Is that accurate?
