The Bucks winning the championship resulting in an worldwide outpouring of respect and joy for Milwaukee.

The most cited article in ASR written in the last decade Gauchat? Wow, I was not aware
Not nearly the most downloaded/read. People are only citing for its sensational conclusion and not actually reading it.
That goes for many highly cited articled. But how do you know how much articles are read?

I love this sort of logic. It might be read/downloaded less because it is an older article that is also freely available for download in other locations. But...whatever you need to tell yourself.

How does Gordon know conservatives are losing trust in science? He used a survey item asking people the confidence they had in people running the institution.
How do I know who is reading which articles? By using the number of times an article is viewed or downloaded, the same measure used by ASR/Sage to rank the most read articles.

Gordon famously thinks he's not getting the respect he deserves within sociology. My observation is only an explanation. If he's actually logical and normal in his writing (I haven't read it) and his writing isn't widely read, that is one explanation for why there is a mismatch between his citation count and less than expected level of respect.
Other explanations exist, like his rambling on Twitter and blog comments. I'm offering an additional explanation.
