If you think tenured sociology faculty are ideological, go talk to some tenured faculty in your business school who make more money as consultants over the summer time than their university annual salary. For those folks tax cuts and less govt. are the solution to everything. Profits over people any day of the week.
The faculty votes are not binding, but they happen and provide cover to the administration under the guise of taking departmental recommendations into consideration.
Yes, admins make decisions. Faculty vote and inform dept chairs who then make these decisions in consort with deans who are under pressure. You just assume these things never happen. But that’s what they did in Akron Ohio: make cuts based on faculty feedback to chairs. If no feedback given, cuts will be imposed period. Now stop reading this message board and go start preparing your lawsuit.
Duh. Faculty votes are rarely legally binding, esp at dept level. They advise for or against tenure, promotion etc. But they have an impact. It will be interesting to see in these dept meetings how many older colleagues will volunteer to retire to save their junior TT colleagues who are about to be sacrificed on the altar of budget cuts. My guess is very few.
