Both are really great for this area. I'd give Duke the very slight edge, but the gap isn't large enough to bade your decision off of. Email potential advisors and try to assess fit.

Who cares about prestige if it doesn't get you a job? Duke has outplaced Chicago since this site started almost every year, sometimes by a lot.

Both are fine. Chicago is a little better for prestige within sociology, but at Duke you will have more choice in relevant faculty.

And get off this site. Break the habit while you're still young.

Chicago still has more prestige among full professors and most associates. They don’t keep track of the rankings as closely as grad students and junior faculty do.

Chicago just leaves you alone to sink or swim, not uncommon to see 10th year grads. Duke seems to provide more systematic and efficient training.

This has changed a lot in the last 3 years. Big overhaul of the timeline and advising system.
