At the minimum, SWS should have a process to ensure that their editor's side hustle will not impact editorial decisions.
Barbara Risman is the worst

It can be problematic in other ways, for example, if her own students feel pressured to show up to the retreat to get her support.
Not sure why, but the tactic somehow reminds of DJT's hotels and golf clubs cashing in from his job as president. Those afflicted with TDS simply cannot resist from wedging the Donald into every conversation, always.

This thread is why for all the troll that happens here, I still want SJMR to be anonymous. I wouldn't say a word in public about this. The COI, in this case, is truly appalling. SWS not saying a word about Risman advertizing her profit-making hustle is not fitting of its mission.
Tenured professors can say what they want about creating a non-anonymous forum, but this discussion would not happen in a public forum. Twitter is one, for that matter.

Would you want to be Risman's student if you knew your advisor was prepping other students for the job market? Would you want her to write your letter? Would you want to know if she was writing letters for people who had paid her directly? What if they had paid her thousands of dollars for a workshop experience? Would Risman refuse to write letters for people she had been paid by? What if those people had attracted many other visitors to her business? Now, what if you were on a committee and received a letter from Risman? Would you find yourself wondering about the relationship that it emerged from? Might you question whether it is as reliable as a letter written by a different senior scholar for a different candidate. I just cannot fathom that a tenured professor would be prepared to risk their professional credibility for a small bit of extra cash. You have to wonder whether she has gotten herself into some kind of trouble.
