Each body chapter "should" lend itself to three articles: 1 focused on race (remember that white people are a racial group), 1 focused on gender, 1 focused on class/stratification. You might have chapters that lend themselves to 2 race, 2 on gender, etc.

That's not what I was saying.
I was saying that a dissertation's findings (i.e. it's body chapters) "should" address--if only indirectly--society's three major social categories.
This is the advice that I got when I started my dissertation.
And, if your dissertation doesn't speak to all of these three in some way there's a chance that you'll hear about it at your job talk or that your application will end up in the Reject Pile.

Like I said sad state of affairs in sociology. Reducing society down to purely race, gender, stratification as the "three major social categories" is exactly why sociology departments are getting less lines each year.
A related problem is not knowing the difference between less and fewer.

I just can't bring myself to produce anything from my dissertation research, and ppl are driving me crazy with tenure clock talk ... Any advice out there?
I hate my diss, but I milked it for a few articles anyway and worked on other projects on the side.

Coauthored with a friend on a different topic in the same field. This turned into three articles in good journals. I also worked on other projects that were tangentially related to my diss topic, but not till later on after I was finished milking the diss.

6039, that advice is bugf*ck. As was whoever gave it to you. Many sociologists don't work on any of those topics, and you don't create dissertations around some kind of pat recipe. Well, not if you are competent.
