I don't agree with the segment of the ASA community who believe it is important that everybody list their pronouns on their badge to promote trans inclusivity, but I also don't want to stand out by not listing mine if everyone is doing this.
Good if you plan to list your pronouns on your badge, no good if you are checking the "No pronouns please" option.
It will not last. People actually involved with fighting for trans-inclusivity consider requesting pronouns to be offensive as it can "out" people who are not ready to publicly assume their identity. File this one under "Latinx" as another white people thing that will ultimately be remembered as short-sighted and offensive.
Are they forcing people to *opt out* of some kind of SJW juju to receive the usual NAME / INSTITUTION badge they've had forever?
Yep, YOU have to OPT OUT if you don't want to play the pronoun game. And make no mistake, for the "Sociologists for Trans Justice," those who opt out WILL be id'ed as opposed to "gender inclusive practices" and to creating an "equitable environment"...in other words, a vicious ENEMY. Read the statements on adding a pronoun query on the ASA webpage.
Other BS over the years has led me to pocket my badge for most of the conference, but now I will only show it when requested/ required.
^ Lol, for years I've been saying the only thing more VLRM than wearing your badge at ASAs is wearing your badge with all kind of s**t flair tacked on to it ("member, subcommittee for sociologists in east bumpkins"). I'm going to have to revise that for this year...
People, wearing your badge is VLRM behavior. It screams, "nobody knows who I am" and invites people you don't know, and therefore aren't worth knowing, to talk to you. The only thing more VLRM is wearing a badge with a bunch of s**t flair tacked on to it *and* your preferred pronouns. Players don't wear badges.
Where oh where are the bros who constantly reassure us that we can ignore whatever performative nonsense ASA is up to as "cooling out the rubes," as "not what it is like in my VHRM department," as "not really sociology?"
Face it, ASA is *this* far from AAA now, the circular firing squad formed years ago, and they are taking the rest of us down with them.

IF YOU JUST GO AND TRY TO REGISTER FOR ASA, YOU WILL SEE THAT YOU CAN CHOOSE TO HAVE YOUR PRONOUNS LISTED ON YOUR NAMETAG OR CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE THEM LISTED.
