Trans here and I find the concept of requesting anyone at random to list their pronouns to be extremely offensive and insulting, arguably an act of violence. I also find the concept of cis people listing their pronouns offensive and insulting and to be political appropriation.
ASA pronouns poll
-
Honest question here and I'd love a serious response.
I don't understand what we're supposed to do with the pronouns people list. I assume nearly all of us are perfectly skilled at and comfortable with using gender neutral language - I haven't used gendered pronouns in the classroom...ever and wouldn't use them at a conference either. So it is really hard for me to see why I would wind up in the situation of misgendering someone at a conference in the first place. What gives? Am I supposed to squint at someone's badge, see what they prefer, and then drop gender neutral language, making a point of using the pronouns they choose?

And if you do not do that, you are a terrible person.
