I've heard its a much better conference than ASA (at least for this studying crime and deviance).
Are people going to the American Society of Criminology Meeting this year?

Actually, I finally realized that Atlanta is a blast. You have to get out of the downtown area and head over to Midtown and some of the east side neighborhoods where its fun. They have something called the Beltline (like the Highline in NY) with miles of bars and restaurants and shopping.
Just wish it wasn't in Atlanta this year. That city is boring af

Atlanta is a great town. People just need to venture out of downtown. Midtown, Decatur, Westside, Five Points, Beltline, etc. I moved from there to Nashville and I regret it every day.

I am going this year instead of ASA. The papers are good. It's a smaller and more friendly group of scholars. I know it sounds nerdy but the Presidential addresses are always pretty good. I personally like Atlanta. Even the downtown area has improved but mostly Midtown, and the Eastside neighborhoods (Virginia Highland, Decatur) are fun. My girlfriend lived there for years and I always had fun visiting her.

ASA flat out suqs compared to ASC. ASC is still much larger than a regional soc conference but small enough that it’s not completely overwhelming. The prestige related antics are way less at the forefront of the conference compared to ASA which basically gives out participation trophies with the amount of awards available. This means less grandstanding overall and an overall better atmosphere. Finally, the CJ types like to get blasted and have a great time. ASA is full of teetotaler types and bores. ASC is a shutdown the bar night every night.

I can confirm all this. ASC is just more fun. They work hard and they play hard.

For the fist time in 10 years I am skipping ASA and going to ASC instead. The last time I went to ASC was back in 2011. I just realized that most of my work cites people who are more likely to be at ASC than ASA and frankly, Im over ASA. I hear the criminologists are more fun anyhow. Also, looking foward to checking out Atlanta. Apparently its the epicenter of micro-breweries in the South.
