There should be a name of this kind of argument. Like argumentum ad nuance, or argumentum ad variation.
Any time a sociologist argues that, "yes a central tendency exists, but there is variance, and the variance is what matters" it always seem to be in service of some politically correct conclusion. In this case that the environment matters more than genetics.
