Am I an idiot to study historical sociology?

They’re a nice section and it’s a cohesive group but be prepared to be on the market for a long time. No one is hiring historical sociologists except on the computational methods ticket or *maybe* if it’s historical sociology of race. Most likely you’ll be on the market for years no matter how and where you publish, and you’ll most likely end up underplaced.

Historical soc is not just an area of study but also methodological. It’s really served me well. I have an interdisciplinary presence and my work attracts interest. The comparative and historical elements always seem to make even standard regression stuff more interesting and often relevant to today. More people should study it.

Agreed!

yeah, not exactly. Every historical sociologist traces their lineage to Theda Skocpol. And some of the best comparative historical work in the early 2000s through the present come from women: Julia Adams, Elisabeth Clemens, and Ann Orloff's 2004 historical sociology volume was and is a definitive work in historical sociology. Clearly there are lots of dudes but women have been important for hist soc and are recognized properly as such.
It's a boys club. If you're a dude, you can maybe join the club, but if not a dude, don't bother.

I have a friend who went that route. Sociology of knowledge type stuff from an institutional perspective. Good news: not a lot of competition. Bad news: The competition that exists tends to be smarter than the average bear. Other bad news: not a lot of jobs, of course. So you're not crazy to do it, but definitely find something sexy and do it really well. Lot of strategizing involved. So as long as you understand the level of commitment here to have even a minimal level of success (e.g. a TT job, anywhere), go for it.

Sure but YOU don’t matter. Skcopol, Adams, Somers, Orloff, Clemens ; they matter, which is why you’re in this site and they’re full professors at top soc departments.
yeah, not exactly. Every historical sociologist traces their lineage to Theda Skocpol.
No, I trace my lineage back a tad further, to Toqueville, Marx, and Weber. -
