I genuinely feel bad for people who work in these roles with PhDs from top 10 programs.
sounds like an e-mail job

Is "academic-adjacent" a transparently face-saving concept with no basis in reality, like "white-adjacent" is a transparently artificial face-saving concept for the constant empirical contradiction of the "white supremacy" thesis?
Is there a sociological concept of adjacency that is not just special pleading for failed careers or failed theories?

Academic adjacent jobs are EQUAL to academic jobs. We have the same goals as faculty and often more responsibility. In some ways, faculty work for staff.
There's nothing wrong with academic adjacent jobs (weird term, fwiw), but they are definitely not equal to academic jobs. I don't look down on these jobs. They are just different. I do get annoyed when people in these adjacent jobs have a chip on their shoulder and treat me with disrespect, but then are shocked when the reverse happens to them.

I disagree. My university's (R1) advancement office might as well be called Carmax. Very much has a used car salesmen vibe.

Has anyone gotten an academic-adjacent job? If so, what kinds of jobs did you get? Are these stimulating for PhDs?
Yes and it sucks. You are looked down on by professors.
smh
