lol @ Penn State thinking they can get Harvard ABDs when they should be shooting for UMass Amherst ABDs (this is not to bash UMass, quite the contrary, as I'm sure there are great people there, like there are at any department, but sociology is a hierarchy and PSU seems to be unaware of that).
which of these searches will fail/won't get their first choice

Berkeley Phd, famous adviser, studies race and health, international comparative component, quant, AJS/SF/SP all solo, so even 4-5 articles in lower tiers = tenure, and... he's black. I'm guessing you're either blind or willfully ignorant of how markets work.
Yeah, he’s doing good but there are more recent PhD’s that have stronger CV’s like Flores or Wilmers...

Anyone know who are the new invites that PSU is interviewing? APs? ABDs?
wiki said no new invites. Can anyone confirm?Whoever updated the wiki should have better writing skills. "no - new invites are" is apparently ambiguous. Did they mean "No. New invites are..." OR "no new invites are..."

Harvard can't hire Wilmers yet. Flores LOL...
FWIW Monk gave a talk in my department and he's got a book project and probably a bunch in the pipeline. And I get the hysteria too, he's clearly really damn smart and quickly made a mark in race studies. My only gripe is I think he's playing it safe. He's made good contributions but after seeing him talk I'm convinced he's playing his cards tight to the chest.

I hate it when people say what I'm about to say but... you sound like a 2nd year graduate student. I'm a top 10 AP who actually studies race...

Oh, so you're more of an authority than all of the top departments throwing this guy offers combined? Yes, I trust your judgment is totally unclouded by butthurt jealousy. This thread shouldn't even be discussing Monk anyways. He's obviously a star. Poached by Princeton and now Harvard's trying. Everything that was already said earlier, pedigree, famous adviser, top pubs, solo, book project and other things cooking, studies race and health, blah, blah, blah, diversity, blah, blah. I'm so bored of seeing this pointless nonsense.
Can we get back to failed searches? It's far more entertaining than reading vapid posts by insecure, jealous minded APs (or grad students masquerading) and is actually the point of this thread. Thanks.

Sorry, and no disrespect to the new flyouts (if this is actually a thing) at PSU. But the next tier of applicatmnts below those 4 are probably folks like Shi...probably already snatched up by MRM programs like Iowa with upward aspirations.
That's why it's a fail even if they fill the position.
