Ali Kadivar to Boston College has got to be among the top hires that nobody here is talking about. ASR, SF, Mobilization, etc.
he's great. but this thread isn't about candidates, it's about the imminent failed searches due to whale watching.
Predicting the future is usually bad, but as much as it pains me to admit it I agree. Harvard is clearly #1.
It never made sense to predict Princeton as #1 in the long term because Harvard or (Rich school in a better location) always steals their best people. Over and over and over again.
Harvard's about to separate themselves as the clear #1 department. Great placement. Lots of resources. Prestigious. And a mix of stars of all ages if they can land these APs.
Harvard is wrecking everybody. Multiple JMC stars. Offers out to multiple AP stars. Has Princeton even placed anybody yet?
Just looked at the Harvard sociology faculty page. Did not realize how many huge people are there. For some reason, I'd categorized Harvard as kinda like Yale: Ivy League, sure, but many other top 20 departments have equivalent or better rosters.
Yeah, Harvard is definitely #1 today. But last year they lost arguably their best mentor (Western) and a MacArthur Genius grant winner (Desmond) and another really good person (Garip). Pretty soon the most important living sociologist is going to retire (Wilson) and a bunch of their other big names are close too (Patterson, Skocpol, Marsden). Prinecton, NYU, and other big money schools will throw money at their younger big names.
They're gonna be fine on the whole but just remember that sometimes things change quickly.

Western hurts. Desmond not nearly as much. Lots of awards, but very little substance. No the vapid AJS/ASRs on how eviction causes poverty and disposable ties bollocks don't count. Garip hurt. Wilson will hang on longer than people think. Patterson will too. Skocpol isn't involved in Soc and how active is Marsden anyways?
Meanwhile they've got Sampson, Bobo, Waters, Lamont, Dobbin, Small, Pager, Killewald (Princeton and NYU swing and a miss), Beckfield, and maybe Frye and Monk too (stealing from Princeton again... ow!). That's a very loaded roster and most prospective grad students will flock there compared to almost any other department. Harvard will be #1 for a while, I doubt Princeton and NYU can do much to stop them (well Princeton could actually retain stars for a change.. ha...)

Pretty much this. Re: Desmond, not much of a mentor. Not yet at least. Too busy being a "star"

Yeah, people are thinking way too narrowly about what makes a "#1 department" or how grad programs are ranked.
There is no universe in which losing the only one of about 15 legitimately famous sociologists (and the only one under 40) is good for your likelihood of being a "#1 department." Might not affect the quality of the grad program that much but that's not really the point.
Active mentorship of grad students is only one purpose of an academic department.
So, wiki indicates that Penn St. will not seek additional flyouts. If true, they're the first of several to fail.
Indiana next, UCLA?

Well, will Monk really stay at Harvard? Maybe he can't stay in one place. As for him being a star, his online CV shows him having 3 publications. total. please tell me it hasn't been updated, and instead he has 10 pubs. If not, Wilmers makes him look weak in comparison.
Wilmers CV makes everybody look pretty weak, there are full profs with less AJS/ASR/SF than him. That's if all we do is bean count pubs on CVs to check if somebody's a star. Frankly we all know that's not how the real world works. 10 pubs sounds nice, but where, on what topics, what's the quality, are they co-authored, coattail riding advisers or senior scholars?

Sure, but is Monk a star? if so, why? I've read his papers, and they're fine, but not jump to a bigger ship every year good.

I think you read that wrong. The wiki is indicating that the previous candidate did not accept the offer and that there *are* new flyouts happening. Or at least they were. May be done by now. Still could be a failed search, which is hilarious.
Berkeley Phd, famous adviser, studies race and health, international comparative component, quant, AJS/SF/SP all solo, so even 4-5 articles in lower tiers = tenure, and... he's black. I'm guessing you're either blind or willfully ignorant of how markets work.
